Texas hooked a good one.

The daughter of former NBA star Jermaine O’Neal has verbally committed to the Longhorns for women’s volleyball, she announced this week on Twitter. Asjia O’Neal is a 6-foot-3 standout for Southlake Carroll in Carroll, Texas, and has been a top-notch volleyball prospect for quite some time.

Asjia’s volleyball career was dealt a blow three years ago when she required open heart surgery to repair a minor leak in one of her heart valves. She has been healthy since then, however, and quickly became one of the top prep players in the country. Last fall, Asjia led her Carroll team with 101 blocks and 300 kills, helping the squad win the 7-GA title and reach the 6A Region 1 quarterfinals.

Texas knows what it takes to be an elite squad. Coach Jerritt Elliott guided the Longhorns to the national championship match in December, where they fell to Nebraska. Elliott, the 14th-year head man, has appeared with Texas in the national semifinals or final in each of the last four seasons, including a title campaign in 2012.

Asjia’s father, Jermaine O’Neal, was a 6-foot-11 forward who played in the NBA for 19 seasons. The six-time All Star is best known for his time with the Indiana Pacers. Like Asjia in volleyball, Jermaine was one of the country's best basketball prospects in high school; however, he took a direct route to the NBA from high school.
