Minnesota started last season with road losses to Stanford and Texas A&M, then went on to win the Big Ten and reach the Final Four, notching victories over the likes of Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Penn State along the way. Almost all of that team is back, save for graduated All-American outside hitter Daly Santana. Coach Hugh McCutcheon (fifth season) says he has several OH candidates in the mix, including senior Sarah Wilhite, junior Alyssa Goehner and two sensational freshmen: Alexis Hart and Brittany McLean. The Golden Gophers will again have imposing blockers, led by sisters Hannah Tapp and Paige Tapp, and junior Molly Lohman. There's even more depth at the position, with redshirt freshman Taylor Morgan and incoming freshman 6-5 Regan Pittman. Sophomore setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a sensational freshman year. "She's had a taste of it," McCutcheon said, "and she wants more. She's very driven." Steady junior Dalianliz Rosado returns at libero, with freshman Lauren Litzau making an early impression.
Minnesota exceeded outsiders' expectations in 2016 … but not their own. It will take another solid effort to finish among the Big Ten elite, but this roster has athletes who already know what it takes to get to the Final Four.
