Calvin Wins Third DIII Volleyball National Championship
The Calvin College Knights won the NCAA Division III women's volleyball tournament, defeating Washington University-St. Louis in the final.
The Calvin Knights needed only three sets to dismiss their championship challengers from Washington University-St. Louis in the Division III volleyball title match on Saturday, November 19.
With the 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 victory, the Knights added the 2016 crown to those obtained in 2013 and 2010. WashU has more national championships than any other Division III program, but Calvin managed to stop the Bears from winning their 11th.
Anna Kamp lead the match with 13 kills. Kamp is the fifth Kamp sister to play for head coach Amber Warners at Calvin, and the fourth to earn First Team All-American honors. Calvin’s senior middle Laura Danhoff earn the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award, while freshman middle Sarah DeVries and junior setter Jenna Lodewyk were also named the All-Tournament Team along with WashU’s Caroline Dupont and Julianne Malek.
The national championship match and both semifinals (WashU vs. Southwestern and Calvin vs. Northwestern-St. Paul) were decided in straight sets, but all four quarterfinal matches went to five sets on Thursday, November 17. The four matches lasted over 11 hours, with Eastern, Emory, Tufts, and Mary Washington going home at the end of the night.
Although Calvin and WashU are no strangers to the Division III national championship, 2016 marked the first-ever national semifinal appearance for both Northwestern-St. Paul and Southwestern.
