The Stanford Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Kevin Hambly as the new women's volleyball head coach.
Hambly spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at Illinois where he accumulated a 178-86 record and made seven trips to the round of 16. The native of Simi Valley, California, who played at BYU, replaces 16-year Cardinal coach John Dunning, who retired earlier this month after leading Stanford to its seventh national championship title.
"I am thrilled to welcome Kevin, Mary, and their daughters to the Stanford family," Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir said. "Kevin is not only a great coach and teacher of the game, but he possesses the same values that make Stanford special. With a strong core returning from the national championship team, I have no doubt that Kevin will keep our women's volleyball team among the nation's elite. I believe he will maintain the integrity and sportsmanship this program is built on while ensuring our student-athletes reach their full potential on the court, in the classroom and beyond The Farm."
Hambly's signature accomplishments include leading the Fighting Illini to the national championship match in 2011, serving as president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association from January 2013 to December 2015, and being an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team from 2001 to 2004.
