She's never the tallest player on the court, but Marissa Hornung is often the most talented. Playing for Providence High School in Clarksville, Indiana, the 5-foot-8 outside hitter has won three state championships, is a three-time first-team all-state honoree, and led her team in digs and kills this fall as the captain and sole senior on the roster.
“Marissa Hornung may be the best ball-control player and competitor in this entire class,” Purdue head coach Dave Shondell said of Hornung, who verbally committed to the Boilermakers in 2015 and signed her National Letter of Intent earlier this month. “At 5-7 with an explosive first step, this dynamo will cover as much ground as any Boilermaker in the back 20 feet.”

College Commitment: Purdue
Although she’ll likely be a defensive specialist in college, Hornung played a key offensive role for Providence, which went 37-2 this fall and made the Class 4A state semifinals. In her high school career, Hornung tallied more than 1,500 kills and is the all-time kills leader at Providence.
“My favorite part about sports in general is how it reveals a person's character,” Hornung said. “The sport of volleyball gives both teams a chance to celebrate each point, revealing their true passion for the game.”
