Miami East senior Jonni Parker led the 2017 Viking squad with 449 kills and 315 assists, but perhaps the most impressive line item on her stats sheet is the 153 aces; that mark ranks her fifth in state history for aces in a single season, according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association website.

Last year, as a junior, in the process of leading Miami East to a Division III state title, Parker racked up 161 aces, which ranks fourth in the Ohio High School Volleyball record books.

The Penn State-committed setter/opposite got into volleyball after watching her sister Paige play in high school and eventually play for the College of Wooster. Paige was an outside hitter, but Jonni quickly took to the setting position, saying she enjoyed being able to control the game and make important decisions.

A four-year captain for her high school team, Parker also plays club ball for Munciana, and her team won the 18 Open title at AAU National Championships in June. Although originally verbally committed to Ohio State, Parker ultimately chose Penn State, signing her National Letter of Intent last month.

“The atmosphere of the gym when you walk in is unreal,” she said of the seven-time national championship Penn State program. “You can clearly see that everyone is doing everything in their power to be their absolute best.”

Listing “chasing greatness” as her motto and saying the key to her success has been not letting any obstacle stand in her way, Parker will likely fit in just fine in Rec Hall.

One of the obstacles Parker has overcome is hearing loss, which she’s dealt with almost her entire life.
