Volleyball runs in the family for Tuaniga. Her parents met at an open gym in Long Beach and her two older brothers played in college (Gus at Hawaii and 2018 National Player of the Year Josh at Long Beach State). Gus is now a volunteer assistant with the LBSU beach volleyball team, while Josh plays for the U.S. men’s national team and professionally in Poland for MKS Slepsk Malow Suwalki. Mom Tinei works as the club director for Apex 1, where Gus is also a head coach.
Mia will add yet another Tuaniga connection to Long Beach State, as she signed her National Letter of Intent to the 49ers last month.

“Mia has a great understanding of the game,” Long Beach State head coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer said. “As a setter, she can create opportunities offensively for her attackers. She has an ability to bring out the best in her teammates.”
Tuaniga led Mater Dei to a CIF Southern Section crown and CIF state title in 2018 as a junior, earning the MVP honor.
“(Mia) has a great understanding of the game,” Mater Dei coach Dan O’Dell said in an interview with the OC Register, “and a great ability as a setter to create offense and create opportunities for her teammates.”
