65-0: Kelly Claes And Sara Hughes Win Pac-12 Pairs
Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes dominated the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Pairs Tournament.
No other team in NCAA women’s volleyball history has consistently dominated their opponents like USC’s Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. In the final two matches of the Pac-12 pairs tournament, the duo of Orange County natives collected two sweeps, extending their win streak to 65.
In the semifinals versus Arizona State’s Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follett, the Trojan pair never lost the lead and won easily 21-13, 21-15. They then met Arizona’s top pair, twins Madison and McKenna Witt who defeated UCLA’s Megan and Nicole McNamara in the semis.
The Witt twins were able to challenge Claes and Hughes, even claiming a 12-9 lead at one point in the first set. That set remained tight until the very end, but with Claes and Hughes up 21-20, the Witts sent over an ill-timed overpass, which Claes devoured at the net. Game two was a similarly back-and-forth battle, but the consistency and mental toughness of the USC pair helped them come out on top 22-20.
The Pac-12 team tournament concludes Sunday afternoon, with the final airing live on Pac-12 Networks at 4 p.m. PT.
