On day one of the first-ever JVA West Coast Cup, competition was fierce. With 10 Flo50 ranked teams in almost every Open division, spectators watched the nation’s top prep volleyball players go head-to-head in one of the last major tournaments before AAU Nationals and the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships.
 
Day One was all about setting yourself up for success in the later rounds. Here’s how the results shook out.


 
In 18 Open, A4 Volley 18 Purple had a fantastic showing, going 3-0 in a tough pool that included national No. 17-ranked Coast 18-1 and No. 2-ranked TAV 18 Black. A4 Volley--which features Illinois commit Emmaline Walters, Purdue-bound libero Julianna Resinger, and Cal recruited setter Devon Chang--won the head-to-head battle with TAV 25-14, 25-18 to finish first in pool.
 
Munciana 18 Samurai, K2 18 Adidas Jota, and Temecula Viper 18 Rafu, which were each the top seeds in their pools, went 3-0 in day one of competition in Long Beach to finish on top. In Pool E, Xceleration Blue 18-1 and Actyve 18 Mizuno tied with 2-1 records, but Xceleration won the head-head-to head battle to earn the first-place finish.
 
Watch out for TAV 17 Black in the 17 Open division. This squad was undefeated for the first half of the season and is back to its winning ways in Long Beach. Going 3-0 in pool play, TAV 17 Black didn’t let a single opponent score more than 20 points, with Texas recruit Asjia O’Neal and future Minnesota Gopher Adanna Rollins leading the way.
 
SG Elite 17 Roshambo went to three sets with Madfrog 17’s N Blue to start the day, but it was smooth sailing from there as the Cali team swept its second and third opponents to sit first in the pool.
 
Legacy 17 Elite and Sunshine 17-1 also lived up to their seeding, winning their pools with 3-0 records.
 
In 17 Open Pool F each match was best of five because there were only three teams in the pool, and it was Wave 17 Kevin that rose to the top. The San Diego squad had to earn it, however, going to five with Idaho Crush 17U (25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13).
 
Tstreet 17 Naseri won Pool B with a 3-0 record, but Mintonette m.71, APAC 17 Yosh, and Goldenwest 17 Asics all finished with a 1-2 record, forcing a double playoff to determine the final seeding. Goldenwest defeated APAC 15-13, but Mintonette m.71 took down Goldenwest 15-10 to earn a spot in tomorrow’s Division 1 pools.

An incredibly competitive 16 Open division saw A4 Volley 16 Purple upset Coast 16-1 18-25, 25-23, 15-11 and defeat K2 16 Adidas Hilby in straight sets to win Pool A. Tstreet 16-Mike squeaked out a first-place finish in Pool B with a 25-17, 24-26, 15-10 victory over Rage 16 Garren. In the crossover match between first-place finishers Tstreet and A4, Tstreet won in overtime in the third 25-18, 19-25, 17-15.
 
Wave 16 Brent emerged from day one with an unblemished record, although No. 16-ranked Munciana 16 Ninjas pushed the San Diego team to three sets.
 
Pool E featured a tie between SG Elite 16 Roshambo and Asics Louisiana 16, which both finished the day with 2-1 records; however, with the 25-20, 25-15 head-to-head victory over SG Elite, Asics Louisiana earned the top spot in the pool.
 
Sunshine 16 Westside finished 3-0 and handed No. 11-ranked TAV 16 Black its only loss of the tournament so far, earning the first-place finish in Pool F.
 
Twelve 16 Open teams advanced to tomorrow’s Division I pools, which provide an opportunity to make it to the Gold bracket on Monday. Those 12 teams are:

In 15 Open, TAV 15 Black wasted no time in the first day of pool play, holding all opponents under 15 points. That is, at least, until the Texas squad met Wave 15 Brennan in the crossover match between the winners of Pool A and Pool B. TAV emerged victorious, but it took three sets (26-24, 20-25, 15-11) to do so.
 
Mintonette m.51, which ranked fifth in the most recent Flo50 list, didn’t lose a set in pool play, holding all opponents in Pool C under 20 points, except in the first set of its match with Sunshine 15 Westside, when the California team reached 22.
 
Coast 15-1 won its pool, but not without a fight. After sweeping its first two opponents, Coast went to three with Munciana 15 Lorax, winning 25-13, 22-25, 15-13 to take first in Pool D.
 
With a 31-29, 25-22 victory over Seal Beach 15 Tony, Mizuno Long Beach 15 Rockstar Carlos earned the top spot in Pool F, completing its sweep of all three pool play opponents.
 
SG Elite Roshambo 15-1 defeated Tstreet 15 Curtis in the last match of the night in Pool E, finishing the day 3-0, with 2-1 Tstreet earning the second-place spot.
 
Tomorrow’s 15 Open division 1 pools will feature the top 12 teams from the first day of pool play. Those teams, which will continue in pursuit of a spot in the Gold bracket on Monday, are:

The 14 Open division was all about Tstreet 14 Carson. The Irvine-based club went 3-0 without losing a set and keeping most opponents from scoring more than 20 points.
 
TAV 14 Black cruised for most of the day, but faced a tough SG Elite Roshambo 14-1 team in the final round of pool. The SG squad managed to push TAV to three sets, but the Texas team won in the end, securing the top seed out of the pool.
 
Mintonette m.41, the No. 1 seed in Pool C, also finished the day 3-0, however, it was forced to play three-set matches with SG Elite Roshambo 13-1 and Wave 14 Rachel. Sunshine 14 Westside and Coast 14-1 also went 3-0 to win their pools.
 
Ten teams from 14 Open will compete in division 1 pools on Sunday for the chance to advance to the Gold bracket on Monday. Those teams are:
