USA Men Finish Third In NORCECA Pan-American Cup Pool
The U.S. Men's National Team suffered a five-set loss to Cuba in the final day of pool play competition at the 2017 NORCECA Pan-American Cup, placing third in Group A. It will play Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. Men's National Team suffered a five-set loss to Cuba last night in the final day of pool competition at the 2017 NORCECA Pan-American Cup in Gatineau, Canada.
The USA squad finished pool play with a 1-2 record, placing third in Group A, and will face Group B second-place finisher Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals tonight at 7 PM ET.
Against Cuba, the young American team came out strong, winning set one 25-19, but the USA men couldn't retain their hold on the momentum. Cuba won sets two and three before the USA got its groove back to win set four and push the set to a tie-breaking fifth.
All 14 men on the USA roster started in at least one set. Opposite Arvis Greene, outside hitters Brenden Sander and David Wieczorek, and setter Jonah Seif each contributed nine points to the American effort. Cuba's Miguel Gutierrez led the match with 24 points, and the tournament points leader Miguel Lopez added 14.
Cuba, which went undefeated in pool play, earned a bye into the semifinals. From Group B, Argentina finished first and was awarded the second semifinal spot.
Group A second-place finisher Dominican Republic takes on Group B third-place Canada in the quarterfinals tonight at 5 PM ET.
Mexico and Venezuela, which finished fourth in their respective pools, await the losers of the quarterfinals for classification matches.
