Last night was full of upsets and heart-pounding five-set matches as teams fought for a spot the second round of CIF regional play in Divisions 1-5, which takes place Saturday. The Open Division teams all get going this evening.

Glendale Adventist won its first title in school history on Friday by defeating Santa Clarita Christian for the Southern Section Division 9 championship. As a result, Glendale was rewarded with the No. 1 seed in Southern California D5 regional play. The Cougars earned a bye as there was not a full field for this regional, and they will play the winner of No. 8 Maywood CES vs. No. 9 Excelsior Charter on Saturday evening.

The Southern Section Divisions 7 and 8, along with San Diego Section Divisions 2 and 3, are well represented in the Division 4 state tournament.
In Division 3, the road to Santiago Canyon College and the state championship match goes through Point Loma. The Pointers have been tested thoroughly this season and have suffered losses to Open Division top seed Torrey Pines (in four), Division 1 No. 7 seed La Costa Canyon (in four), and Division 1 No. 9 seed La Jolla Country Day (in four) among them.
Sierra Canyon, last year’s Southern Section Division 4 champion, moved up to Division 3 and won a CIFSS title over the weekend.

The 29-9 Santa Margarita Eagles had their best win of the season on September 21: a five-set Trinity League thriller over Mater Dei at home, and they are the No. 1 seed in the SoCal side of the CIF Division I state tournament bracket.
